Hymn to Vairocana

Om, homage to the glorious paradox!
Follow me now, and Look -
We pass through the gateway
At the crown of Golden Mañjusri
And enter the vast mandala of the Conquerors -
A world so much greater than the one we are leaving
And greater still than the one we are from

We enter the vast mandala of the Conquerors,
And we turn its great turning -
We follow the sun's turning
On through dawn of unshakeability
On through the midday of heart that gives all
On through the dusk of deep love and stillness
On through the night of no fear, the hand across the void
We follow the turning of the sun

We follow the sun, for we seek the sun
We circle it like a great eagle, and at last, we look up
And there is the ice mountain
The brilliant ice mountain
The centre of the journey

Higher than a mountain can reach
Is the ice mountain peak
Ice pinnacle reaches up into the glorious sunlight
And at its top, surrounded by brilliant blue
Under the brilliant blue
A cool cave
A cool cave in the blue-white diamond ice
A cool cave at the top of the ice mountain

And outside the cave, in brilliant blue and sunlight
Sits the Illuminator
In sunlight sits the Illuminator on throne of white, white, gold
And he is so white
Almost you cannot see him, but that
Though the ice gleams bright
In the sun's light
He is brighter still
Like snows under sun
So bright
Almost you cannot see him
The Illuminator

Just to be seen - if your heart's eye meets him
He sits in lotus meditation
Eyes blue with love
Hair black as nights are
Like snows under sun
His hands tell the truth

And in his hands, the wheel
The wheel of gold
The wheel shining from the great ice mountain
The wheel shining in the Master's hands
The wheel of the turning of the spiral
Of the turning of the heart
If your heart's eye meets it
Wheel becomes more than wheel
Gold becomes more than gold -
Shimmering like the rainbow-coloured cloud
Emerging from the blue beyond

The Illuminator shines
From the top of everything he shines
And by his sides, the two snow lions, the two white lions
Proclaiming peace - proclaiming truth
Proclaiming patience - defending Love
Beauty in Strength
Strength in Beauty
Obedient to Love
Obedient to Wisdom
The two lions singing the heights

The Illuminator sits and smiles
Higher than eagles he sits and smiles
He has the great perspective
The cool cave sees all
The cool eyes see all
The eyes of love see all, but
His roots are the roots that go deeper than mountains
His roots grow down through fire
His roots grow down through space
They bridge all great emptiness
For, as all we beings, all phenomena,
Are bound to one another
He is the vow which binds us

Om, homage to the glorious paradox!
He is the sun, and the sun shines through him
And he is the sun, and the sun shines through him
If your heart's eye sees through him
If your heart's eye meets his light
There is blessed Vajrasattva!
And if your heart's eye meets his light -
It meets the light of the delight of the inconceivable.....

The Illuminator sits and smiles
Like snows under sun
His hands turn the truth
His hands hold the wheel that is more than wheel
If your heart's eye enters the wheel -
There is the vast mandala
There is the sun's turning
There is the heart's release
Om, homage to the glorious paradox!

May we rise up his mountain together
As did the Bodhisattva of Compassion
Whose Wisdom went Beyond
Rising, casting off weights and rising
No skandhas, no senses
No chains, no truths noble
no path, goal, or absence of anything
No fear, no going, and no stopping us

Let Go! Unbind! Defy the gravity of ignorance and habit!
All homage to the Illuminator
Who, smiling, holds wheel, spiral, and mandala
Like a puzzle, in his hands of truth
And turns it, like a key in the lock of our heart's eye
That we may throw open the shutters
And let in the light
And let out the light

Om, homage to the glorious paradox!
Om, homage to the Illuminator!
